Now behold, one came and said to Him, "Good" teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?" 17. So He said to him, "Why do you call Me good?" No one is good but One, that is, God. Bit you want to enter into life, keep te commandments."
20. The young man said to Him, "All these things I have kept from my youth. What do I still lack?" 21. Jesus said unto him, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.
21. But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had GREAT POSSESSIONS.
Matthew 19:16-22
When I was 12 years old I made a decision that would change my life. This choice that I made literally shifted my course of life. My decision to follow Jesus Christ was not made based on what I had but what I wanted! I noticed that there was something missing, a void, a missing piece that no matter what I did, buy or change, I couldn’t fulfill it. When I was introduced to Jesus Christ, that void was fulfilled, at the moment my life was completely changed! When he spoke “Come follow me” I left everything behind and followed Him!
In Matthew 19:16-22 we see a young man, just like you and I. He asked Jesus “Good Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life? You see many people think that by just doing good things or good deeds they could get into heaven. I’m sure you heard many say “Hey, I’m a good person.” But Jesus’ response was a little bit different then what the young man thought. Jesus said “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One. That is, God. But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments.” Jesus said it! No one is good, there’s only one that is good and that’s God. Jesus was telling, “Hey, just by being good isn’t enough” there’s more to that, and then he goes on saying, follow the commandments. The young man said “Which Ones?” and Jesus replied “You shall not murder”, “You shall not commit adultery”, You shall not steal,” “You shall not bear false witness”, Honor you father and your mother,” and “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
The next thing that the young man says is what most people say today, in some way or another, he said “All these things I have kept from my youth. What do I still lack?” What do I still lack the boy replied. He’s saying “I know all these commandments and I have followed them, but what’s missing. Just like me at 12 years old, I said to myself, I have gone to church before, I’m a good person, but what’s missing? That’s exactly what the young man in this story said to himself, I have it all, I’m rich, I’m a good person, I haven’t done wrong, I even follow the commandments. This kid had it all, the bible says that He was a Rich Young Man. If you were rich today, how many people you know that have money and have it all? They are comfortable, no worries, just living the life!
You might not be rich or have a lot of money, but you might have a comfortable lifestyle. You’re doing good, you’re going to church and you’re just living your life day in and day out, you think you have it under control, you do what you want whatever it may be. “Hey I’m good!” What’s missing!? What’s missing the young rich man said…Jesus will then reply to his question that will ultimately come down to a decision in which he will have to make. A decsion that you and I must make.
Jesus said to him If you want to be perfect then leave EVERYTHING behind and come follow me, leave your money, leave your cars, leave your pleasures and come follow me, for you will store up treasures in heaven. When the young man heard this the bible says that he turned away in sorrow for he had GREAT POSSESSIONS.
What is your great possession in your life that causes you to turn away from the Lord? What do you struggle so much to give up?
Will you make a sacrifice and leave it all behing for God? He is calling us to come and follow Him, seperated from the things that temporarily fill in our void and pursue something will give us eternal life. We must turn away from OUR POSSESSIONS that will only last us ahwhile. We must store treasures in heaven for that is our final destination, meanwhile we must follow God to experience his fullness in our lives, he will teach us and speak to us and guide us through life.
To Die is to Live!
